The Process
- Your first step is to talk to your teacher. They will provide good, personal advice both on your ability and fit for a CDP Dance Company.
- If they approve, then you need to set up an appointment with Mrs. T (email the office to set up an appointment).
- If she approves, then sign up for Company auditions! Auditions for 2008-2009 are over, but private auditions can be held as needed. General auditions for the 2009-2010 will be held in May 2009 (view the calendar for dates and times). Cost is around $35 for general auditions and is charged per hour for private auditions. Results are posted soon after the auditions are held!
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
- What is the CDP Dance Company?
The CDP Dance Company is a team of dancers who are serious about the art of dancing and are willing and able to commit further than those in the normal classes. Each Company is made up of dancers selected by audition. These dancers must audition for ballet, tap, jazz, hip hop, and lyrical dance forms to be eligible and will dance at a faster pace than other dancers their age. They will also represent the studio in various competitions during the year. - How many Companies are there?
Each year is potentially different. For the 2008-2009 dance season, there are four Companies: Senior, Teen, Junior, and Mini. Companies are determined both by age and ability.
- What is the time commitment?
One of the big differences between Company and non-competitive dancers is the amount of time spent at the studio. Not only is the time in class significantly more (anywhere from 4 to 8 hours in class per week, depending on the Company). There also are generally rehearsals and practices on weekends. Choreographers are brought in for older Companies and require a weekend of rehearsal and choreography. Come spring, there are mandatory competitions, which may require the whole weekend. CDP attends the Showstoppers Nationals every other year; that event lasts a whole week in early July; however, only certain days are required, depending on the Company. - What is the travel commitment?
The travel commitment depends on the Company. Depending on the year, each Company will participate in 3 to 5 regional competitions. Additionally, the Companies travel to Showstoppers Nationals in Myrtle Beach, SC every other year (2008 being a Nationals year). - What is the financial obligation?
The financial obligation is one other major difference between Company and non-competitive participation. The registration fee and costume deposits are larger and the tuition is higher due to more time in class. Additionally, rehearsals, choreography, and competitions are expenses that are significant and must be factored in. There are also accessories and uniforms, as well as specific makeup that must be purchased at the beginning of the year. - Are there other commitments or factors to consider?
The purpose of the CDP Dance Company is to provide further or stronger training for those dancers who are serious about the art, as well as to create a team or family environment in which a dancer can grow. There must be a desire on the dancer’s part to push herself (or himself) every chance she (he) gets. The Dance Company is an opportunity, privilege, and investment, and should be seen as such! - What are potential factors that would help me to know if I or my dancer is ready to try out for Company?
First and foremost, make sure you love dancing! If you are considering a career as a dancer, this is a great first step. Look for an inner drive, always trying harder and practicing at home. For the younger ones, can they focus well? Are they able to withstand longer classes on more days? - How does a dancer become a part of the CDP Company?
First, talk to your teacher about trying out! Teachers can provide great insight on where you stand, as well as tips to help you improve right now! Auditions for the 2008-2009 dance year have already been held, but you can contact our office for further information. Auditions for 2009-2010 will be held around May 2009. - Is it worth the investment?
Yes, the Company is a significant investment in several aspects. However, the opportunity to dance at this level is a rare opportunity and privilege that we hope prepares your dancer for the next step in their dancing career. We would love to discuss this opportunity with you, so let us know if you are considering it!
